18th July 2018 'Swan Upping' river trip and lunch 11:15am -3:30pm
The Master invites you to join him on Wednesday 18th July 2018 for a river cruise and lunch on board ‘The Waterman’ to view the tradition of Swan Upping on the River Thames at Henley-on Thames. Departure from Henley-on Thames will be at 11:30am returning at 3:30pm.
Every year in the third week of July two livery companies, the Vintners and the Dyers, collect and inspect all swans on the non-tidal River Thames between Sunbury and Abingdon. They take 5 days to cover the 79 miles of river. On Wednesday 18th July they will be working in the stretch of river by Henley-on-Thames which is when we will have a chance to see them. This tradition has been taking place since the Middle Ages and the members of the two companies and representatives of the Crown (The Queen is also Seigneur of the Swans) wear traditional scarlet dress and row on the river in skiffs to catch the swans. There is much more information about Swan Upping on the website of the Vintners company including a video and downloadable brochure, please click here
