24th May 2018: Tour of The Charterhouse 5:30-7:30pm
We are pleased to invite members and guests to a tour of The Charterhouse, Charterhouse Square, London EC1M 6AN on Thursday 24th May 2018. The event starts 5:30PM and will conclude by 7.30PM.
Members and guests will enjoy a tour of the buildings and grounds that make up the Charterhouse. Its history dates back to 1348 and the original Charterhouse, a Carthusian monastery, was built in 1371. Post the dissolution it became a mansion for noblemen. Elizabeth 1 and James1 both used it. In 1611 Thomas Sutton purchased the Charterhouse and established the foundation we know now. It provided alms for 80 ‘brothers’ and also a school. Many famous names have attended the school both before and after its 1872 move to Godalming.
This is a rare chance to have a guided tour around the historic buildings and grounds making up the Charterhouse that are secluded behind the gatehouse on the north side of Charterhouse Square.
