Legendary MP and former Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Sir Nicholas Soames came to speak to the WCIB on 21st January in the impressive surrounding of Armourer’s Hall. A UK foreign policy based on sovereignty alone would fail, he noted, in a world where “instability is the defining condition.”   US disengagement from its former role as the world’s policeman and the rise of China means we have returned to an era of Great Power competition. Sir Nicholas pointed out that  an  “immense collision of rhetoric and reality” was bound to hit the new Tory administration. He recommended that they start a national conversation on where and with whom the country should stand, and what its foreign policy should be.
