On 15th January Talk & Toast WCIB members and their guests listened to power couple Sir Robert and Lady Stheeman discuss both their careers and personal lives.

Revered honours and job titles aside, they provided immense comfort to anyone starting out in the City through their entertaining anecdotes and advice gleaned from their impressive careers. Did you know you could fail your maths O Level (twice!) and go on to spend 17 years as Chief Executive Officer of the Debt Management Office?

Sir Robert urged companies to hire people with alternative backgrounds to encourage a diverse pool of thought within organisations - a refreshing message to anyone hesitant of stepping off the prescribed career track. Meanwhile, Elisabeth - a woman who throughout her career has repeatedly found herself the only female in the room - encouraged employees to proudly be themselves in the work place, ask for what they need and move away from bosses who aren’t fully supportive.
